Poseidon 07 — Kekova Boat Tour
Kekova · Demre Çayağzı · Turkish Mediterranean

The Kekova boat tour that runs against the crowd

Most boats start at the Sunken City. We start at the far end and work back — so you swim in empty bays all morning and reach Kaleköy once the day boats have gone home. Aboard Poseidon 07, from Çayağzı harbour in Demre.

A family, not an agency

Osman Cengiz was born in 1962 and has worked the water at Çayağzı since 1985 — day tours, charters and blue voyages from Antalya to Bodrum.

He knows the coves, the winds and the currents of this coast the way other people know their street, and he guides in Turkish, English and German. His wife Gülsüm cooks everything that comes out of the galley and holds a captain’s ticket herself. Their son Cengizhan is the boat’s second captain. Between them they have handled every kind of day at sea, and nobody who steps aboard Poseidon 07 is treated as a ticket number.

Kekova weather and the best time to visit The short answer: June and September are the best all-round months, July and August are the hottest and busiest, and October is the one most people underestimate. Here is why.
The full-day route

Thirteen stops, in the order we take them

Kekova is small enough that every boat visits the same places — what changes is the order. We go the other way round, which is why our swimming stops are empty when everyone else’s are full.

  1. Çayağzı Plajı — Caretta Caretta 10:00

We leave the yacht harbour at ten and slow down off the beach, where a freshwater spring runs into the sea and loggerhead turtles come in to feed. Swim with them, or photograph them from the deck.

  2. Buzağılık Koyu

A quiet, clean bay to start the day in — tea on deck and the first proper swim, with nobody else at anchor.

  3. Gökkaya Boğazı

Through the strait, past Aşırlı Island and its wild goats, with the water changing from blue to green beside you.

  4. Gökkaya Koyu

We drop the hook in the most sheltered corner of Gökkaya. Swim, sunbathe, or do nothing at all.

  5. Bizans Kilisesi — Kişneli Adası

The ruins of a Byzantine church stand on Kişneli Island to port. The captain tells you its history from the deck as we pass.

  6. İkizler & Burç Koyu

Past İkizler bay, Burç Castle comes into view. We slow right down for photographs and the story behind it.

  7. Batık Şehir — Kekova Adası

A kilometre and a half along the Lycian and Roman ruins of Simena, at the slowest speed the boat will hold and as close to shore as we are allowed. Swimming is forbidden here, so this is the one stop you watch rather than swim.

  8. Tersane Koyu

Anchor among the ruins. The stonework underwater here is from the same period as the Sunken City, and you are allowed to swim over it. Lunch is served at this stop.

  9. Akvaryum Koyu

Famous for how clear it is, and quiet by this hour because most boats have already turned for home.

  10. Kaleköy (Simena)

About an hour ashore. Climb to the castle, swim out to the Lycian tomb standing in the sea, walk the village lanes, and eat the homemade ice cream.

  11. Esmeralda Koyu

One of Kekova’s most isolated bays — clear, calm and almost always empty. A last long swim.

  12. Çamlık Koyu

The last swim of the day, in the softest light it gets. Tea, coffee or a plate of fruit on deck while nobody is in a hurry.

  13. Çayağzı Yat Limanı 17:00

Back alongside in Çayağzı, at the same quay we left from in the morning.

Times are a guide. The captain may adjust the programme and the length of each stop for weather and sea conditions — and because this is a private charter, the day can be reshaped around what your group feels like doing.

Poseidon 07

One boat, twelve guests, room to spread out

Poseidon 07 is a 14-metre wooden motor yacht, licensed for a maximum of twelve passengers and crewed by the family that owns her.

On a private charter the whole boat is yours: upper and lower deck both open to you, all day, with sun on one and shade on the other. There is a wide foredeck laid with kilims for sunbathing, a shaded aft deck with a full-size dining table, an inside saloon, one master cabin, a toilet and a shower. A fridge keeps whatever you bring cold, there is a Bluetooth sound system you are welcome to take over, and a swim ladder off the stern. Wi-Fi runs on board and there are sockets to charge your phone, and for the water there is a kayak and two snorkel sets you are free to use. Life jackets in adult and child sizes and full safety equipment are on board on every sailing. Osman and Gülsüm run her between them — there is no outside crew.

Gülsüm cooks, and the boat stops for it
Lunch is not an afterthought

Gülsüm cooks, and the boat stops for it

Lunch is cooked on board and served at anchor — chicken, fish or köfte, with mezes and salads, then fruit and çay to finish. It is the reason a lot of guests come back.

We anchor at Tersane and eat there, with the ruins under the water beside the boat. Tea and coffee run all day at no charge. On a private charter we do not sell drinks on board — bring whatever you like, alcoholic or non-alcoholic, and there is no corkage of any kind; the fridge is there for it. On the shared day tour other drinks are available to buy on board instead. Nothing about the day is rushed to fit a schedule: if the group is still swimming, the boat waits.

  • Cooked fresh, served at anchor
  • Chicken, fish or köfte
  • Tea and coffee free all day

What you will see

The Kekova archipelago

Every stop on our route, and why it is worth the time we give it. Weather →

Batık Şehir (Sunken City)

The Lycian town of Simena, sunk by earthquakes in the 2nd century. Staircases, walls and storerooms lie just under the surface for 1.5 km.

Kaleköy (Simena)

A village with no road in. A Lycian sarcophagus stands in the shallows, a crusader castle sits above the roofs, and the ice cream is homemade.

Tersane Koyu

The old shipyard bay. Underwater stonework from the same era as the Sunken City, and here you are allowed to swim over it.

Akvaryum Koyu

The clearest water in Kekova, and quiet late in the day once the day boats have started back.

Gökkaya Koyu

Wide, sheltered and green-blue, reached through a strait watched over by the wild goats of Aşırlı Island.

Korsan Mağarası

A sea cave the boat can enter. Cool, echoing and a favourite stop on the winter route.

Esmeralda Koyu

One of the most isolated anchorages on this coast — clear, calm and usually empty.

Çayağzı

Our home harbour, where a freshwater spring runs into the sea and loggerhead turtles come in to feed.

Why book with us

Twelve guests, never more

Licensed for twelve, so there is always deck space and a seat in the shade.

Family crew since 1985

Osman on the helm, Gülsüm in the galley, Cengizhan as second captain.

★★★★★
The best day of our whole Kekova holiday. The boat was spotless, the crew so helpful, and they looked after our little daughter so kindly. Tersane Bay, the Sunken City and Gökkaya Bay were all worth it, with lovely swimming breaks along the way.

Osman and Gülsüm made us feel like family from the very first moment. Beautiful bays all day, wonderful grilled fish and mezes, and drinks that kept on coming. We have already recommended it to all our friends.

An unforgettable day with an extremely professional crew — historic ruins, stunning nature, swimming and snorkelling, and a delicious lunch on board. Highly recommended.

Frequently asked questions

Everything guests usually ask before booking. If yours is not here, send it to us on WhatsApp.

Where do the boat tours leave from?
Every tour leaves from and returns to Çayağzı yacht harbour in Demre, about ten minutes by car from the town centre. You can drive, take a minibus or come by taxi.
Is there parking at the harbour?
Yes. There is free parking around Çayağzı harbour.
What time should I be at the harbour?
Please be at Çayağzı by 09:30 — thirty minutes before the 10:00 departure — so there is time to board and settle in. Before we cast off, the captain briefs everyone on the day’s programme and on how the boat works.
What is included in the price?
On the private tours: lunch cooked on board and served at anchor — chicken, fish or köfte as the main course with the usual mezes and salads — plus tea and coffee free all day. We do not sell drinks on board, so bring your own, alcoholic or non-alcoholic, at no extra charge; there is a fridge for them. On the shared day tour: a set lunch menu of şakşuka, pasta, meyhane pilavı, salad, kabak tarator and chicken, with fish instead of chicken for ₺200 extra per person. Tea is served from departure, and other drinks can be bought on board.
What does the day look like?
Thirteen stops: the loggerhead turtles off Çayağzı beach, Buzağılık bay, the Gökkaya strait, Gökkaya bay, the Byzantine church on Kişneli island, İkizler and Burç with its castle, a slow pass along the Sunken City, lunch at Tersane, Aquarium bay, about an hour ashore at Kaleköy, Esmeralda bay, sunset at Çamlık, and back to Çayağzı around seven.
What language is the tour guided in?
The captain guides the day himself, in Turkish, English and German. He is a local captain who knows this coast intimately, and the historical and natural sites along the route are explained in detail as we pass them.
Can you swim at the Sunken City?
No — swimming above the Sunken City is prohibited to protect the site, and the boat may only pass slowly. Tersane bay nearby has underwater ruins from the same period that you are allowed to swim over, and that is where we anchor for lunch.
What should I bring?
Swimwear, a towel, sun cream, a hat and sunglasses. A snorkel set and an action camera are worth packing if you have them. In spring and autumn bring a light jacket or a long-sleeved top for the evening.
Is there an age limit?
No. The tours suit every age. Small children need to be supervised by a parent, and child-sized life jackets are on board.
Can I come if I cannot swim?
Yes, and life jackets are on board for exactly this. Please know that the bays we anchor in are not shallow. Non-swimmers are welcome to get in the water wearing a life jacket, but doing so is at your own responsibility — the crew are running the boat and cannot provide one-to-one supervision in the water.
Can I bring a camera, drone or snorkel?
Yes — cameras, drones, snorkels, masks and fins are all welcome, and there is plenty on this route worth filming. We also keep two snorkel sets and a kayak on board for guests to use, so you do not have to bring your own. You use your own equipment at your own responsibility, and any drone must be flown in line with local environmental and safety rules.
What are the boat’s specifications?
Poseidon 07 is roughly 14 m long and 4.30 m in the beam, licensed for a maximum of 12 passengers. She has one master cabin, one toilet and one shower, a wide sunbathing deck forward, shaded seating and a dining table aft, a fridge and a Bluetooth sound system. There is Wi-Fi on board and sockets for charging phones, plus a kayak and two snorkel sets for guests. On a private tour both the upper and lower decks are yours to use.
What safety equipment is on board?
Life jackets for adults and children in sufficient numbers, plus full safety equipment. The crew are professional and follow standard safety procedure on every sailing.
What happens in bad weather?
Safety comes first. The captain may change the route, and if conditions make sailing unwise we will offer you another date.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please let us know at least 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel. We are flexible when the weather is the reason.
Can I bring my own food and drink?
On a private charter, yes — and for drinks you will need to, because we do not sell them on board. Bring whatever you like, alcoholic or non-alcoholic, at no extra charge, and keep it in the fridge. On the shared day tour it works the other way round: drinks are available to buy on board. Lunch is included on both, so there is no need to bring food. For safety we ask you not to bring glass bottles, and heavy drinking is not permitted.
Is there a toilet on board?
Yes — one toilet and one shower.
Is there an entrance fee at Simena Castle?
Yes, the castle at Kaleköy charges admission (or use a Museum Card). You are free to skip it and spend your hour ashore in the village instead.
How do I book?
